The Manchester Regiment capture the occupied village of Givenchy on 20th December 1914. The area had been the scene of fighting for several days, as British and Indian forces sought to attack the Germans entrenched around the village in order to relieve the pressure on the French at Arras during the First Battle of Champagne. With a German counter attack having succeeded in taking part of the village, the Manchesters were part of a reserve force introduced to the fighting to re-occupy Givenchy. The opposing lines were back to how they had started by 22 December, for the loss of thousands of lives.
