Verdun - The shattered remaoins of a 155mm casement bear testimony to the furious assault on Fort Vaux. Actually there is some evidence that after the capture of Douaumont the French placed demolition charges within the fort and that this turret was actually destroyed by accident when the demolition charge was accidentally triggered, possibly by a German artillery shell.
