Belleau Wood - Marine Attack 6th June Looking eastwards towards Belleau Wood across le champ Lever from the Lucy le Bocage road. The 3/5 USMC attacked across this field towards the wood on June 6th and is where Floyd Gibbons got shot. ...and then it began to come hot and fast. Perfect withering volleys of lead swept the tops of the oats just over us. ...It was coming from a new direction - from the left. I was busily engaged flattening myself on the ground. Then I heard a shout...from Major Berry...he was making an effort to get to his feet. With his right hand he was savagely grasping his left wrist. 'My hand's gone' he shouted. He was then hit in the arm and right eye and lay in the field for three hours talking with Hartzell. 'Hold your head up a little', Hartzell said, 'I want to see where it hit you'. 'I don't think it looks very nice,' I replied, lifting my head. ... I painfully opened my right eye and looked through the oats eighteen inches into Hartzell's face. I saw the look of horror on it as he looked into mine. Twenty minutes later, after painfully crawling through the interminable yards of young oats, we reached the edge of the woods and safety.
