Argonne - The Pocket was the name given to the position occupied by 'The Lost Battalion', eight American units of the 77th Division, roughly 550 men, isolated by Germans after an American attack in the Argonne Forest on 3rd October 1918. Roughly 197 were killed in action and approximately 150 missing or taken prisoner before 194 remaining men were rescued on 7th October. They were led by Major Charles White Whittlesey who received the Medal of Honor and was also a pallbearer at the ceremony interring the remains of the Unknown Soldier. However he never overcame his guilt at the loss of so many of his men and he committed suicide in 1921.
