Diagram showing how the bomber in a Gotha plane aimed its bombs over Britain during the First World War. To reduce the element of luck, the Germans used the Goerz bomb-dropper's telescopic sight which was included in the equipment of the plane. Accuracy was still difficult and planes preferred to fly into wind so that the flight of the bomb could be straightened.
