'Private C. R. Barker carrying up ammunition and water to the firing line under heavy fire. The difficulty of supplying the firing line on the mountain top at Chunuk Bair (Dardanelles) with ammunition and water was very great. But on August 8th 1915, Private Barker of the Wellington Battalion, New Zealand Force, rendered most valuable service in carrying both which were of vital necessity overground exposed to heavy fire. He also acted as guide to a regiment going up to reinforce, and on his return carried in a wounded man. For his conspicuous gallantry he was awarded the DCM.
