The Temple of Venus (Aphrodite) at Baalbek, Lebanon. A town in the Beqaa Valley of Lebanon situated east of the Litani River, known as Heliopolis during the period of Roman rule, it was one of the largest sanctuaries in the empire and contains some of the best preserved Roman ruins in the Middle East. Photograph taken by Colonel David Sutherland of SBS and SAS, was part of a 12-man Special Boat Service unit which made a daring raid on the occupied Greek island of Rhodes. Sutherland then took part in Operation Albumen on Crete, when 29 German aircraft were destroyed for the loss of one officer, and afterwards escaped with several Cretans who feared German reprisals.
