A diagram showing the advance in ship-building from the foundation of the Cunard Company from the 1840 Cunarder 'Britannia', at the time a wonder ship but with meagre accommondation for only 115 passengers, followed by the Russia in 1867, the Etruria and Umbria in 1884, Campania and Lucania in 1893, Carmania in 1905, Mauretania in 1907, Aquitania in 1914, Berengaria in 1919 and finally, the enormous 'Queen Mary', which operated mainly in the North Atlantic. Launched in September 1934, her maiden voyage began in May 1936 and at the time, she was the largest . She was retired in 1967 and is currently moored permanently at Long Beach, California, operating as a hotel, restaurant and tourist attraction.
