The photograph shows the west side of a carved stone stela known by archaeologists as Stela K, created during the reign of Jade Sky (early 9th century). Set amid the ruins of Quirigua, an ancient Mayan archaeological site in the department of Izabal in south-eastern Guatemala. The monuments at Quirigua include unusually large stelae elaborately carved from single blocks of red sandstone.
