Voie Sacree - the road from Verdun to Bar le Duc was the one road into Verdun. In Feb 1916 a special force of 8,200 engineers was formed to keep the road open. At the height of the battle 90,000 men along with 50,000 tons of materials a week travelled along this road in a process known as the 'Noria' after the continuous North African water wheel.
