Roger Casement (Roger David Casement, 1864-1916), Irish patriot, poet, revolutionary, nationalist and human rights activist, seen here in a portrait photograph signed by him, and dated 4 August 1915. He was executed for treason at Pentonville Prison, London, under controversial circumstances, with various prominent people pleading for clemency, and is regarded as a martyr. His body was exhumed and given a state funeral in Dublin in 1965.
