The site of the ancient Greek city of Pergamon, situated today in Misia in northwestern Anatolia, sixteen miles from the Aegean Sea. Once nearly invaded by the Celts. The first Bishop of Pergamon, Antipas was believed to have been martyred here in 92AD. The great altar of Pergamon is in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin - it was this altar (believed dedicated to Zeus) that John of Patmos referred to as Satan's Throne in his Book of Revelation (Revelation II:12-13). Many notable structures still survive on the upper part of the Acropolis. Housed a famous ancient Library. Famous for parchment production. Epigonus the 3rd century Greek Sculptor came from here.
