The coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie of Romania at Alba Julia in Transylvania on 15 October 1922. There was no historical tradition of coronations in Romania. A church was specially built for the religious service that preceded Ferdinand's coronation: the ceremony itself took place in the town square. Queen Marie, typically flamboyant, arranged the ceremony and designed the costumes. Her crown was based on a fresco of the legendary Princess Despina Doamna at Curtea de Arges.
