Photograph of the three-masted barque, 'Terra Nova', taken in 1903 when she was setting out for the Antarctic to try to find and help the 'Discovery' expedition. 'Terra Nova' was launched in 1884 by Alexander Stephan & Sons Ltd of Dundee for the Dundee whaling and sealing fleet. After proving her worth in that role, she was employed as relief-ship for the Jackson-Harmsworth Arctic expedition (1894-1897) and the Discovery Expedition of 1903. Then, between 1910 and 1913 she was the main vessel of the British National Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Scott.
