View near Darnall, the scene of the escape and recapture of the prisoner, Charles Peace. Charles Peace was an infamous cat burglar and murderer who managed to evade arrest for an astonishing twenty years. Over this period, Peace killed two policemen and the husband of a Mrs Dyson, with whom he had once had an affair. He was arrested for the attempted murder of a policeman, for which he gave a false name, but was recognised charged for all his crimes. With a last bid for freedom, Peace tried to escape by jumping from a train, but he was caught and sentenced to death.
