On the 2nd of March 1940 Mr George Haigh was charged with the murder of Mrs Olive Henrietta Durand-Deacon. Searches were made by police of the Hurstlea Products factory at Crawley where Haigh was company director. A carboy that had once contained sulphuric acid was discovered, which was possibly used to destroy a human body. Mr Haigh's London home was also examined, with items removed for evidence.
