Photograph showing Clement Attlee (left), General Jose Miaja (centre with glasses) and Giner de Los Rios giving the Socialist clenched-fist salute from balcony of a government building in Madrid, 1937. As the British Conservative government was trying to uphold a non-intervention policy with regard to the Spanish Civil War, the arrival of Attlee in the front-line of the conflict caused a certain amount of argument.
