Herbert Ingram (1811-1860), founder of the Illustrated London News. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, Ingram was a printer and bookseller who noticed that his customers always asked for the paper which contained illustrations. Convinced there was a market for a completely new type of publication to meet these demands, he resolved to supply one. The paper was an instant success and made Ingram's fortune. Ingram became M.P. for his home town in 1856. He was drowned, along with his eldest son Herbert, after the paddle steamer, 'The Lady Elgin', on which he was travelling, was involved in a collision on Lake Michigan.
