An illustration by S. Begg from an eye-witness survivior of the sinking of the 'Lusitania ' by a German U-boat in 1915. As well as carrying a large cargo of Allied munitions, the liner was also transporting, among its passengers, 100 neutral Americans. The incident played a large part in bringing the United States of America into World War I.
