The Roman Dictatorship (Magister Populi or Master of the People) is instituted for crisis situations or special purposes, ruling with supreme power for a set period. According to one source, the first Dictator was Titus Lartius Flavus (or Rufus), appointed in 501 BC. Another source states that the first Dictator was Manius Valerius, in 505 BC.
