Star trails looking directly east, from Masai Mara, Kenya, mid-Oct 2006, at 3 degrees south latitude, from 9 PM to 2 AM, near the dark of the moon (moon below horizon), using Provia 100 film and a 16mm full-frame fisheye lens at f5.6. Sky is reddish because of very fine red dust blowing strongly all day and part of night for the entire week prior to the photograph. Star colors are exactly as recorded on film (blue for very hot stars, yellow and orange for cooler stars). The parallel trails of 3 blue stars in the center are the "belt" of the constellation of Orion. Some trails go straight up through the zenith because of the camera's location near Earth's equator. Trails are interrupted at intervals by clouds which blew over during the 5-hour exposure.
