The gigantic coma, the luminescent cloud constituting the majority of the head, of Comet Hyakutake, C/1996 B2, seen here as it sublimates off the nucleus of the comet and forms the comet's dust tail on March 23, 1996. A comet this intrinsically bright has not passed this close to the Earth since 1556.
