The Great Nebula in Orion is perhaps the most beautiful object in the sky. It is visible in binoculars as a fuzzy patch of light surrounding the "sword" stars below Orion's belt. A telescope reveals a wealth of detail and a hint of green color. Long exposure photographs show the red color caused by the glow of hydrogen gas.
