Formation of iron(III) acetate complex. Iron(III) acetate coordination complex [Fe3O(OAc)6(H2O)3]OAc formed by adding 0.25 M solution of iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) drop by drop to 0.25 M solution of sodium acetate (CH3COONa or NaOAc). The formation of the red-brown complex is used as a test for Fe3+ ions in qualitative inorganic analysis.
