Testing mouth rinse for fluoride. Fluoride (typically in form of sodium fluoride, NaF) is often added to mouth rinse for cavity prevention. To test a sample of a mouth rinse (left frame) for fluoride, 1M solution of calcium acetate (Ca(C2H3O2)2) is added. CaF2 precipitate is formed (right frame), indicating presence of fluoride, NaF + Ca(C2H3O2)2 -> NaC2H3O2 + CaF2.
