Dancing Molecules on Graphene (data acquired using Gxsm+MK2-A810). Rendering of the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) probing individual molecules when they adsorb on graphene (a single-atom thin sheet of carbon) bound to the surface of ruthenium metal. Graphene is an allotrope of carbon in the form of a two-dimensional, atomic-scale, hexagonal lattice in which one atom forms each vertex. It is the basic structural element of other allotropes, including graphite, charcoal, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes. Graphene is about 100 times stronger than steel by weight, conducts heat and electricity with great efficiency and is nearly transparent. Nanotechnology (nanotech) is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale.
