A molecular surface model of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus transmitted through sexual contact or skin abrasions that infect keratinocytes within basal epithelial tissue. There are over 120 identified types of HPV, and while most produce no symptoms, a number of types may lead to the development of skin warts or genital warts, skin lesions and a variety of genital cancers. Most cases of cervical cancer have been attributed to HPV infections, though routine screenings and HPV vaccinations have been used as preventative measures to decrease cervical cancer fatalities.
