Three-dimensional visualization reconstructed from scanned human data of the human skull taken apart along sutures, immovable fibrous joints which remain after fetal development. Bones of the cranium, including the mandible, maxilla, nasal, sphenoid, zygomatic temporal, parietal, frontal, and occipital bones are visible. These bones, which shield and protect the brain, are separated by sutures. The skull, the most complex part of the skeletal frame, gives shape to the head and face, protects the brain, and houses the special sense organs. Air-filled spaces (sinuses) in some of the bones surrounding the nasal cavity lighten the skull's weight and act as echo chambers, adding resonance to the voice.
