Close-up of the head of a grasshopper (family Acrididae), a fairly common insect found in open fields in the Northeast of America. Note the orange spot near the antennae (and near the middle): this is a parasitic mite (family Trombidiidae). This common parasite of grasshoppers average 43 per grasshopper and do not seem to affect the lifespan of the insect.
