Excavation of Templo Mayor, Tenochtitlan, Mexico City. The Templo Mayor was an important Aztec temple. It was dedicated to two gods, Huitzilopochtli, god of war, and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture. Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec civilization. The population of this city peaked at over 100,000 in around 600 AD, making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time.
