Allende meteorite. Polarized light micrograph (PLM) of a section through one of the many Allende meteorites which fell on Mexico on February 8 1969. The first of these meteorites to be recovered was found at Allende. This meteorite is from a larger carbonaceous chondrite meteorite which broke up as it fell through the atmosphere. About 2 tons of rock were recovered in total. Allende meteorites are conglomerates of small rocky inclusions held together by fine mineral dust. This is a chondrule, an inclusion consisting mainly of the minerals olivine and pyroxene. The Allende meteorites gave valuable information about the solar system. Magnification: x50 at 35 mm size.
