Unfurling fiddlehead of ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopterus). Fiddleheads are the tightly coiled young fronds of ferns. They are shaped like the ornamental spiral on the turning end of a fiddle, hence the name. These particular fiddleheads are safe to eat, nutritious and evidently very appetizing.
