Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed the presence of numerous doulble-stranded, full-length DNA-containing (dsDNA) spumavirus, or foamyvirus virions. One of the identifying morphologic characteristics displayed by these virions is the spikey nature of their protective proteinaceous capsid, which is a feature evident in this TEM. The spumavirus is a genus of the Retroviridae family of viruses. These virions mature within the host cell's cytoplasm, rather than through the host cell's endoplasmic reticulum, which means that when the virion buds from the host cell, the envelope covering the virion is cytoplasmic in origin, and not endoplasmic.
