Fluorescence micrograph of a number of astrocytes from human brain tissue, showing their star-shaped processes (in red) and central nuclei (yellow). Astrocytes form part of the neuroglia ("nerve glue"), the mass of support cells found in the gray & white matter of the brain & spinal cord. They are the most numerous glial cells in gray matter, where they are believed to provide mechanical & metabolic support for neurons (nerve cells). This micrograph was made at Yale University, in the course of research into the role of astrocytes in enhancing the regeneration of neurons following injury to the brain or spinal cord. Magnification: x120 at 5x7cm size.
