Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of hairy cell leukemia (formerly leukemic reticuloendotheliosis). Note the nucleus in the white blood cell in the center is deformed by the leukemia. Hairy cell leukemia is a rare form of cancer of the blood. The disease causes the bone marrow to make too many abnormal or "hairy" white blood cells (B cells) and as a result produce fewer healthy cells (white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets).
