Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of longitudinal section of the spectacularly large Golgi body characteristic of euglenoids (in this case, the colorless flagellate Khawkinea quartana), it consists of a stack of about 25 cisternae (flat discoid membranous sacs) whereas higher plant and animal Golgi bodies have only a few cisternae; at the base of the stack is the forming face, where new cisternae are constructed from new membranes; at the U-shaped top of the stack is the proliferating face, where whole cisternae peel off, carrying products elsewhere in the cell for metabolism; vesicles bud from the edges of the cisternae, similarly transporting metabolites and membranes to other cell sites; unusually, the center of the stack has a structural core of dense material; the cytoplasm contains ribosomes and mitochondria.
