The Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), is an inherited condition resulting from a defect in the enzyme lysyl oxidase, that causes the linkage of tropocollagen molecules into collagen fibers. Collagen is a protein that is widely distributed in animal connective tissue where it acts as a binding agent for the cells which comprise the various tissues. It also provides the matrix to which calcium salts are added to form bone, and as the substance of scars and tendons, displays a high tensile strength.
