Whampoa is a romanization of of a region of Guangdong, formerly known as Canton or Kwangtung in English, now called Huangpu District, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. Huangpu was the dock area and waterfront for many European cargo vessels trading with China in the 18th century, such as those associated with the Maritime Fur Trade and Old China Trade.
