Moses by Lorenzo Monaco circa 1408-10, tempera on wood, gold ground. Considered a masterpiece of Lorenzo Monaco, the leading late Gothic painter in Florence. Moses was, according to the Hebrew Bible and Qur'an, a religious leader, lawgiver and prophet, to whom the authorship of the Torah is traditionally attributed. He is the most important prophet in Judaism and is also considered an important prophet in Christianity and Islam, as well as a number of other faiths. In Exodus, he aids the Jews in escaping slavery in Egypt. Later in the book, he receives the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai and dictates them to his people.
