Luigi Marchelli, a Genoese surgeon, obtains from a sheep matter for inoculation against smallpox. The anti-vaccination text accompanying this illustration sarcastically sang the praises of Marchelli who, it claimed, was up there with Galileo and Descartes. Coloured etching, c. 1807.
