"Fly, Caterpillar, Pear, and Centipede," a page of calligraphy accompanied by an illustration from around 1591-96. The calligrapher Georg Bocskay was one of the greatest scribes of the 1500s and he included a variety of texts in different languages in his Model Book of Calligraphy. This page presents a Latin prayer, which, thirty years later, was illuminated by Joris Hoefnagel, who painted this illustration in the blank space left at the bottom of the page, taking care to harmonize it with the flourishes in the script.
