Yerkes Observatory, Williams Bay, Wisconsin, 1937. Founded in 1892 by Charles Tyson Yerkes, the institution belongs to the University of Chicago. The big dome at the right houses the 40-inch (1.02 m) refractor telescope, the largest achromatic refractor ever put into practical astronomical use, while the smaller domes contain a 24-inch reflecting instrument and a 12-inch refractor.
