Gideon Algernon Mantell (1790-1852) founded the scientific study of dinosaurs with his attempt to reconstruct the structure and life of the Iguanodon, pictured here. Mantell and his wife were the first to discover and recognize the fossil teeth of the Iguanodon in 1822.
