Lifting a cannon during the recovery of the shipwreck "Las Maravillas" sunk in 1658 - Bahamas. The Maravillas (full name: Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas / Our Lady of Miracles) set sail from Havana for Spain on January 1st, 1656 with a fleet of armed warships. The Maravillas was accidentally rammed by a smaller ship while the fleet was attempting to turn away from shallow water near Grand Bahama Island. A storm approached overnight as the ship was taking on water and the Maravillas disappeared with all but 45 of the original crew of 650 surviving. The Maravillas sank with a 400 punned solid gold statue of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus along and a large treasure of gold, silver and jewels. For decades after, attempts were made to locate the wreck and treasure with reports of less than half of the treasure being recovered. Recent recovery efforts starting in the 1970's have produced some coins and jewels but the bulk of the treasure still remains to be found.
