The historical center of Sighisoara in Transylvania, Romania was founded by Transylvanian Saxons. Today it is a World Heritage site. It is the alleged birthplace of Vlad III Draculea (15th Century) who ruled at times over Wallachia. Draculea means "Son of the Dragon"; his archenemies, the Turks, called him "Vlad the Impaler". The Irish novelist Bram Stoker romanticized the historical person into a bloodthirsty monster. The Dracula myth today propels tourism but is hated by all honest-to-God Romanians.
