Machaerus was a fortress-palace of King Herod the Great in Jordan. Perched on a hill 700 meters high, it was first fortiofied around 100 BC and later expanded by Herod in 30 BC. In this fortress, Herod's successor, Herod Antipas, had John the Baptist beheaded for disapproving of his marriage to Herodias.
