Argos in the Peloponnese, Greece. The ancient Greeks believed Argos to be the oldest city. Its theater (4th century BC) was, together with the theater in Dodona, one of the largest in Greece and could seat 20,000 spectators. During the struggle for independence from Turkey the theater twice (1821 and 1829) became the meeting place for the National Assembly.
