A train ascends Mount Washington in New Hampshire by means of a cog railway (a railway with a toothed rail, usually in the middle, that meshes with a one or more cog wheels on the train, allowing operation on steep gradients). Built in 1868, the Mount Washington Cog Railway was the first of its kind.
