Thermophilic bacteria (rust colored). This is the hot water running off the Imperial Geyser, with a temperature of 60C, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This thermophilic bacteria has adapted to thrive at high water temperatures and is currently the focus of biological researchers. Bacteria that can live in these extreme condions are called thermophiles or extremophiles.
