Cinnabar is mercury sulfide, an important ore of the element mercury. It is noteworthy for its bright red color, a feature that allowed it to be used in ancient times as a pigment. Cinnabar usually occurs as small grains in rock, but in some localities, such as at in Hunan, China, it forms magnificent single crystals and interpenetrating twins. These are quite distinctive and highly prized among mineral collectors.
